Truman D. Picard Scholarship

INTRODUCTION
The Truman D. Picard Scholarship supports Native American students who are pursuing postsecondary study in Natural Resources, with a strong preference for those whose coursework or degree focuses on Forest Resource management. Awards intended for students in Forestry or Wildland Fire programs are higher; the $4,000 amount is reserved for applicants accepted to or enrolled in Forestry or Fire degree programs at the college or graduate level.
AWARDS
- $3,000 — College students studying Natural Resources (number of awards varies by year)
- $4,000 — College students enrolled in Forestry or Fire programs
- $3,000 — Graduate students, and graduating college seniors who have applied to or been accepted into graduate school, studying Natural Resources
- $4,000 — Graduate students, and graduating college seniors who have applied to or been accepted into graduate school, studying Forestry or Fire
- $2,000 — High school seniors planning to study Natural Resources, Forestry, or Fire
GENERAL NOTES
Only complete applications received by the deadline will be reviewed and ranked by the Education Selection Committee. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. Be as specific as possible in responses.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (all items must be included)
1) Letter of application — up to 2 pages. Address the following:
a. Full name, permanent mailing address, email, and phone number
b. School you are attending or have been accepted to, declared major, and expected graduation date
c. Your academic interest in Forestry and/or Wildland Fire Management
d. Your commitment to education, community, and cultural preservation or involvement
e. Explanation of financial need
2) Resume
3) Three letters of reference — submit with your application (do not have referees send letters separately). Each letter must:
- Be on official letterhead (if no organizational letterhead is available, the referee may create a headed page)
- Be signed (digital/electronic signatures are accepted) and dated within the last six months
- If the letter was issued sealed, open it before including it in your application
4) Proof of Native status — documentation verifying enrollment in a federally recognized tribe or as part of an Alaska Native Corporation per U.S. Government standards. Acceptable evidence includes a copy (front and back) of your tribal membership or descendant card, or a completed BIA Form 4432 (Verification of Indian Preference for Employment). 5) Transcripts — all applicants must submit transcripts (official or unofficial accepted). If transcripts are provided sealed, open them before submission.
- High school seniors must also include an official college acceptance letter and their college class schedule to confirm intended major prior to release of funds.
- College students must provide documentation of their declared major and a current class schedule.
6) FAFSA and Student Aid Report (SAR) — all applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and attach a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR). If you have not yet filed the current FAFSA, include last year’s SAR. To obtain a copy of your SAR:
- Log in with your FSA ID at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa and choose “View SAR” on the “My FAFSA” page, or
- Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 and request that a copy be mailed to you (allow 10–14 days for delivery).
Submit all required materials together with your completed application packet by the published deadline to ensure consideration.
