Winston Salem Foundation Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Winston - Salem Foundation
Intro
Since 1923 neighbors and local supporters have pooled resources so more students from our area can reach their full potential. Today we administer more than 160 scholarship funds. This school year those awards supported 582 students from Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties, distributing $1.7 million.
Who can apply
We offer scholarships for a wide array of students and situations. Awards vary by criteria — interests, field of study, GPA and other factors — and many opportunities are open regardless of your GPA, high school, or the college you plan to attend. Most funds are aimed at traditional-age students enrolled at four-year universities, but there are also options for non-traditional students and community college attendees.
WSF Scholars (traditional student-focused)
- One-Stop Scholarship Application opens: January 1
- Application deadline: submit by midnight on March 15
- Award notifications/funding decisions: provided in late May
These scholarships have differing eligibility requirements (e.g., interests, major, academic record), so completing the One-Stop Application will match you to any awards for which you qualify.
WSF Access Scholarships (for unmet financial need)
- One-Stop Scholarship Application opens: January 1
- Best chance to be considered for the most awards: apply by midnight on March 15
- Final application deadline: midnight on August 15 (note: many awards are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis)
- Funding decisions/notifications: made on a rolling basis throughout the summer (with final notifications completed by August)
These grants are intended to help cover unmet need and are available to both traditional and non-traditional students at universities and community colleges.
Application process — One-Stop Scholarship Application
Most scholarships are available through our single online application so one submission will automatically consider you for every eligible award.
Steps
1. Complete the FAFSA (for U.S. citizens) at fafsa.gov. If you are not a U.S. citizen, log in to the WSF portal after January 1 and follow the specific instructions for non-citizens.
2. Access the One-Stop Scholarship Application and create an online account. You can save progress and return later.
3. Fill out the General Application and any additional recommended opportunities you are prompted to complete. Be sure to meet the deadlines above.
4. Have these materials ready to finish your application:
- FAFSA Submission Summary (after completing the FAFSA)
- Most recent transcript: high school transcript through 11th grade for graduating high school seniors, or current college transcript for students already attending college
- Contact information for a person who can provide a recommendation on your behalf
5. Award notifications: WSF Scholars are notified in May; Access Scholarship decisions are issued on a rolling basis during the summer with final notifications by August.
If you complete the application fully and submit the required documents, we will handle the matching and selection for the scholarships for which you qualify.
