GIAR Grandmother’s First-Generation Scholarship

Scholarship Sponsored by Community Foundation of Northern Nevada

Value: $25,000.00
Awards Available: 3
Deadline : Mar 31, 2026

Overview
This scholarship supports the college education (undergraduate or graduate) of first-generation young women, under age 25, who trace their heritage to Portugal, Mexico, Central America, or South America and who live in Nevada or Hawaii. For the purposes of this award, “first-generation” means either (a) a young woman who immigrated to the United States and has become a naturalized citizen, or (b) the daughter of an immigrant from the listed ancestries. Eligible Nevada applicants are generally those residing in northern Nevada (commonly defined as Tonopah and points north); Hawaii residents statewide are eligible.

Award details
- Typical awards are one-time grants of up to $5,000 and are need-based. Financial need will be confirmed through submitted FAFSA and other financial aid documentation.
- In select cases, one scholarship may be granted to cover the full cost of attendance at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), up to $25,000, also subject to demonstrated financial need.
- Recipients may reapply for future funding; awards are potentially renewable following reapplication.

- Be a young woman under the age of 25.
- Meet the first-generation definition above (naturalized immigrant or daughter of an immigrant of Portuguese, Mexican, Central American, or South American ancestry).
