FFBC Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by First Friday Breakfast Club
Overview
Each year the First Friday Breakfast Club (FFBC) grants scholarships to graduating Iowa high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to combating homophobia and promoting understanding and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) issues within their schools and wider communities.
Eligibility
Applicants must be graduating seniors from Iowa high schools and intend to continue their education at a college, university, community college, or other post‑secondary institution. There is no limitation on the type or geographic location of the school the student plans to attend.
Award amount and disbursement
Each scholarship is valued at $3,000. Funds are distributed in two installments after the recipient submits proof of enrollment at their chosen post‑secondary institution.
Who receives these awards
Recipients come from across Iowa — public and private schools, urban and rural districts — and typically are student leaders in academics, athletics, or the arts. They have used their time and abilities to educate others and foster appreciation for the diversity and contributions of their LGBTQ+ peers.
Selection process and non‑discrimination
A Scholarship Committee evaluates all application materials. After FFBC determines the number of scholarships it can fund each year (based on available donations), the Committee makes award recommendations to the Board. The selection process is free of discrimination based on race, religion, creed, marital or employment status, sexual orientation, or gender identity/expression.
