Rotary Club of Los Angeles Foundation Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Rotary Club of Los Angeles Foundation
Introduction A large share of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles Foundation’s annual budget is devoted to scholarships for high-need, high-achieving students who live in Los Angeles County. These awards are granted through the Foundation’s annual Scholarship Program, which concludes a review process that includes evaluations and interviews of applicants. Many members of the Legacy Circle have designated their endowments specifically for scholarships; the Club therefore presents a number of awards in those donors’ names. The Scholarship Committee manages the program—handling gift acknowledgements, applicant review, selection and distribution of awards, and the annual Scholarship Program event. Scholarship details - Award amount: $10,000 per successful applicant. - Disbursement schedule: Paid in four equal installments of $2,500, beginning the summer after high school graduation. - Continued payments: To receive the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th installments, recipients must submit brief documentation showing ongoing college enrollment, meet a required minimum GPA, and complete 10 hours of community service each year. - Payment method: Scholarship checks are issued directly to the student (not to the college or university). - Competition and number of awards: The scholarships are highly competitive. This year the program plans to grant 20 scholarships. Typical recipients have had unweighted GPAs between 3.7 and 4.0 and a demonstrated commitment to community service consistent with Rotary’s values. Eligibility and selection - Who may apply: High school seniors graduating from a high school located in Los Angeles County who will be enrolling in a four‑year college or university in the upcoming fall. - Selection process: Applicants undergo evaluations and interviews conducted by the Scholarship Committee as part of the annual program. Selection emphasizes academic performance, financial need, and a record of community service in keeping with Rotary’s principles. About Rotary and LA5 - Rotary is a non-political, non-religious humanitarian organization. - Rotarians believe we share responsibility to address persistent global and local challenges, working together to: promote peace; fight disease; provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; protect mothers and children; advance education; and strengthen local economies. - Rotarians use the 4‑Way Test when considering actions and communications: - Is it the TRUTH? - Is it FAIR to all concerned? - Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? - Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? - Rotary began in 1905. Today there are more than 35,000 clubs across over 200 countries. The Rotary Club of Los Angeles is the fifth-oldest club in the world, which is why it is commonly referred to as “LA5.”
