Endowed Scholarships

Anchor Scholarship Foundation administers seven endowed scholarship funds. Each award has its own eligibility rules, award amount, and funding source as described below.

General note on eligibility
Except where otherwise noted, these scholarships are intended for dependent children or spouses of the named ship’s crew members (officer or enlisted). Crew status qualifying a candidate includes active duty, retired, or honorably discharged service, unless a different status is specified for a particular scholarship.

Scholarship details

1) Raytheon–Zumwalt Scholarship
- Award: $20,000 total ($5,000 per year, renewable for up to four years).
- Endowment: Raytheon provided a $125,000 endowment to support this renewable award.
- Purpose: For students pursuing a four-year degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field.
- Eligibility: Must be a dependent child who is a high school senior and whose parent/guardian is or was a U.S. Navy Surface Force service member (officer or enlisted; active duty, retired, or honorably discharged).
- Renewal conditions: Recipient must continue to meet degree focus and academic standards (including maintaining a sustained 3.0 GPA) to receive each year’s installment.

2) USS Bulkeley Scholarship
- Award: $3,500 per year.
- Endowment: Funded by a $120,000 endowment established by the family of VADM John D. Bulkeley, USN (Ret), in honor of him and the ship that bears his name.
- Eligibility: Open to dependent children or spouses of USS Bulkeley crew members (past or present; officer or enlisted).

3) USS Cincinnati Scholarship
- Award: Up to $8,000 annually.
- Endowment: Created with a $200,000 endowment by the USS Cincinnati Commissioning Committee.
- Eligibility: Available to dependent children or spouses of USS Cincinnati crew members (active duty, retired, or honorably discharged; officer or enlisted).

4) USS Thomas Hudner Scholarship
- Award: Up to two scholarships of $3,000 each per year.
- Endowment: Established with a $200,000 endowment by the USS Thomas Hudner Commissioning Committee.
- Eligibility: For dependent children or spouses of USS Thomas Hudner crew members (active duty, retired, or honorably discharged; officer or enlisted).

5) Bill Hurley III Scholarship
- Award: $5,000 per year.
- Endowment: Funded by a $120,000 endowment from the family of Billy Hurley III (professional golfer and USNA graduate); the scholarship honors the ships he served on (USS Chung-Hoon and USS Gettysburg).
- Eligibility: Open to dependent children or spouses of crew members of USS Chung-Hoon or USS Gettysburg (active duty, retired, or honorably discharged; officer or enlisted).

6) Jack H. and Ruby Lucas Endowed Scholarship
- Awards: One $4,000 annual scholarship and two $2,000 annual scholarships.
- Endowment: Created with a $110,000 endowment by the USS Jack H. Lucas Commissioning Committee to commemorate Medal of Honor recipient Jack H. Lucas.
- Eligibility: For dependent children or spouses of USS Jack H. Lucas crew members (active duty, retired, or honorably discharged; officer or enlisted).

7) USS Nantucket Endowed Scholarship
- Award: $5,000 per year.
- Endowment: Supported by a $125,000 endowment from the USS Nantucket Commissioning Committee.
- Eligibility: For dependent children or spouses of USS Nantucket crew members (active duty, retired, or honorably discharged; officer or enlisted).
