Award Details

The scholarship amount is $10,000, and up to one scholarship is awarded annually.

The scholarship funds will be disbursed to the recipients on July 1 of the current year.

Who Can Apply

The James J. Treat scholarship is a monetary award aimed at encouraging undergraduate students enrolled in nondestructive testing (NDT) courses at any accredited college or university.

Selection Process

The ASNT Foundation's Scholarships and Grants Committee will evaluate each application. The selection of the recipient will be based on the quality and relevance of their essay. A well-structured, insightful essay that effectively communicates the applicant's prior NDT training or education, future career aspirations, and how the scholarship will aid in their career progression is expected.

Post-Award Requirements

Upon completion of their coursework, scholarship recipients must submit a written report that includes the following key points:

  • Course Summary: Provide a brief overview of the subjects covered in the coursework. Highlight any specific modules or topics that were particularly noteworthy.
  • Key Takeaways: Summarize the main principles, skills, or knowledge acquired during the coursework. Discuss any practical applications or situations where you can utilize what you've learned.
  • Academic and Professional Development: Discuss the academic and professional competencies you've developed during the coursework. Explain how these skills align with your academic and career objectives.
  • Impact of the Scholarship: Discuss how the scholarship has enhanced your ability to participate in the coursework.

Application Process

  • Applicants must submit an original essay (not exceeding 500 words) that summarizes their previous NDT training or education, future career aspirations, and how the scholarship will aid in their career progression.
  • Applicants must provide the name of the educational institution where the coursework will be completed.
  • Applicants must provide a brief description of the coursework they are considering enrolling in or are currently enrolled in.
  • Applicants must specify the month and year they plan to start the coursework.
  • Applicants must indicate the month and year they anticipate completing the coursework.
  • Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
